Addressing the Palate to End Snoring

At eos Sleep, Dr. Volpi helps our patients deal with all kinds of issues affecting their, or their partner’s sleep. Snoring is the main culprit, whether it is tied to sleep apnea or not.

Snoring is nothing more than the soft tissues in the back of the upper airway vibrating as air passes, but don’t tell that to the person trying to sleep with the pillow over their head next to you!

One method Dr. Volpi may use to provide relief for the patient and the partner is a minimally invasive procedure known as Palate Coblation®.

What is Palate Coblation?

Palate Coblation® is an in-office procedure that aims to stiffen the tissue in the soft palate to minimize a person’s snoring. Coblation® is an advanced technology that involves the use of radiofrequency energy to quickly and safely dissolve target tissue, leaving healthy surrounding tissues intact.

How is Palate Coblation done?

When Dr. Volpi performs Palate Coblation®, he uses radiofrequency energy to form channels in the tissue of the soft palate. The Coblation® devices employ RF energy technology operating at a low temperature to create these channels. The body’s natural response is to form scar tissue in these channels. This scar tissue is less elastic than normal tissue, so it acts to stiffen the soft palate. In the weeks following the Coblation®, this stiffening of the tissues reduces the patient’s vibrations on the soft palate tissue, and this decreases snoring intensity.
