Allergy Testing in San Jose & San Francisco
What is allergy testing?
Allergy testing is generally done as a skin test and can be performed by eos sleep physicians during an office visit. The skin prick test checks a patient for immediate allergic reactions to dozens of different substances. Alternative allergy tests, such as the patch test, may be performed if needed. The patch test is useful when a delayed allergic reaction is suspected—which can take several days to develop.
Why is allergy testing used?
Allergy tests are used to pinpoint the exact substance that is causing a person to have allergic reactions. There are a wide variety of symptoms related to allergies—some that are even life-threatening (such as anaphylactic shock). The most common symptoms of allergic reaction include:
- Watery eyes
- Nasal Congestion
- Runny nose
- Itchy eyes
What does allergy testing involve?
Allergy testing at eos sleep, and takes about a half hour to complete. To conduct the skin prick test, a patient’s skin is cleansed with alcohol and marked for each substance. Then, the patient is exposed to small amounts of each substance with a small tool that pricks the skin. Within about 15 minutes, your nurse or doctor will observe your skin for any raised, itchy, or red bumps that indicate an allergic reaction. If there are any reactions, the area of the skin is matched with the exact substance that you are allergic to.
An alternative test, called the skin patch test is used when doctors suspect a delayed allergic reaction. During this test, your doctor or nurse applies a patch to the skin that secretes the substance into the skin slowly. The patch is worn for two days and then patients return to the doctor to look for any irritation near the patch site.
