Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder that affects millions of people around the world.
It often leads to inadequate sleep, chronic fatigue, and other health problems. While there are various treatment options available for sleep apnea, some individuals don’t find relief through non-invasive approaches.
In those cases, outpatient surgeries like septoplasty and endoscopic sinus surgery can be highly effective in alleviating sleep apnea symptoms. At Eos Sleep, we offer both options.
When Other Approaches Fail
For individuals who continue to experience sleep apnea symptoms after non-surgical treatments, surgery becomes a viable option.
Surgical interventions address specific anatomical issues that contribute to sleep apnea. Examples include blocked nasal passages or a deviated septum. These outpatient procedures can improve airflow and promote better breathing during sleep.
Septoplasty Surgery
Septoplasty is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure that corrects a deviated nasal septum (the partition between the two nostrils). When the septum is crooked, it can lead to a narrowed or blocked nasal cavity, causing breathing difficulties and sleep apnea.
During the procedure, the surgeon straightens the septum, which usually provides immediate relief from impaired breathing and sleep apnea. The procedure takes less than an hour and uses general anesthesia for the patient.
In addition to the benefits, there’s minimal discomfort during and after the procedure, and no external bruising or swelling.
Endoscopic Sinus Surgery
Endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) can also help with sleep apnea symptoms. This option relies on a small fiberoptic telescope (endoscope) to remove small amounts of bone and/or tissue that can block nasal passages and cause chronic sinusitis or nasal congestion.
By restoring the natural drainage pathways in the nose, FESS improves sinus function and reduces sinus-related snoring and sleep apnea. Like septoplasty, FESS is performed under general anesthesia. It offers minimal discomfort, fast recovery, and improved nasal airflow.
